Celebrating 10
Years of Land, Water and Wildlife Protection
Our region is a beautiful patchwok of farms, forests, streams
and scenic rural landscapes. The land and how it has been
used for generations is a significant part of our heritage
and history. It also provides a quiet escape from the rest
of the world. Residents enjoy a rural lifestyle here, while
visitors enjoy touring local farms and historic sites. Opportunities
to hike, paddle, hunt, ride horseback, watch birds, explore
the countryside and pursue other outdoor adventures abound.
Over
1,000,000 people rely on drinking water that flows from
Tar River Land Conservancy's service area, which includes
all of the Upper Tar River Basin and portions of the Neuse
and Roanoke River Basins. Furthermore, our area contains
some of the best farmland in the state and the US. Tar River
Land Conservancy protects land for drinking water, wildlife,
farming, forestry, recreation and tourism. We accept gifts
of land with conservation value, and we work with landowners
to secure voluntary conservation easement agreements on
their property in order to achieve the permanent protection
of natural resources important to our community's health
and economic well-being.
Working Locally
to Protect Community Resources
In ten short years, Tar River Land Conservancy has permanently
protected over 16,000 acres of land and 120 miles of streams.
Without a doubt, we're impacing the lives of everyone in
our community:
We
have added 2,500 acres of public park land and game lands
to our local landscape, and are working to provide even
more parkland and public access to the Tar River.
We
are protecting local rivers and reservoirs for the over
1,000,000 people who rely on these resources for their
drinking water.
We
are working with landowners to prevent the conversion
of farmland to development, to protect our food supply
and the production of commodities important to our local
economy.
We
are protecting wildlife important to our natural heritage.
